Since 1996 questions about tobacco use have been included in FSI postal questionnaires. The project started in collaboration with the Swedish National Institute of Public Health. Since 2002 the project has continued in collaboration with the Institute for Tobacco Studies - ITS. In 2007 the project was given the name VAKT.
VAKT is a stand-alone project with purpose to establishing a sound knowledge of the Swedish tobacco habits, people’s attitudes towards their own and others' tobacco use and knowledge of tobacco's impact on individuals and societies. It is hoped that this will help health promotion in Sweden and other countries.
VAKT includes, in addition to the nationally representative postal surveys:
VAKT-Smoke
Is a prospective web-based study of 1000 smokers followed over a period of two years. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Alcohol and Drug Research (SIRUS) and the Institute for Tobacco Studies (ITS).
VAKT-Snus
Is a Web-based study where 1000 daily Snus-users were asked the same questions as in the VAKT, smoke base-line survey. It was conducted in collaboration with the Institute for Tobacco Studies (ITS).
